Exhibited at Martha Jackson Gallery, New York (1960), and later at David Anderson Gallery, New York, Blackout represents a key work from Yokoi’s early New York period. The composition brings together gestural abstraction and emerging symbolic structure, with the diamond form appearing in tension against fields of darkened color and layered material.
The work was selected as the cover image for the Kunstmuseum Bern exhibition catalogue in 2020, underscoring its significance within Yokoi’s oeuvre. Held in the collection of the Estate of Teruko Yokoi, Blackout is currently available for institutional placement.
